TELL US ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY INTO THE WORLD OF FLORAL DESIGN

My journey into the world of floral design began on a ranch in Abilene, where my grandfather introduced me to the art and intricacies of flowers. With a deep-rooted passion for floral arrangements, I embarked on a career in event planning and design. As my company flourished, I recognized the opportunity to offer clients a comprehensive design experience by incorporating floral design into my services. This expansion allowed me to provide clients with cohesive and beautifully curated events from conception to execution.

TELL US ABOUT YOU FIRST FLEURS DE VILLES EXPERIENCE

I was absolutely thrilled when I heard that Fleurs de Villes was coming to Dallas for the first time. It’s incredibly exciting to witness our talented floral community uniting to create artful masterpieces. I feel honored to have been part of such an inspired event and getting to witness the creativity and beauty it brought to our city. I enjoyed pushing the boundaries on our assignment and trusting our vision. It was incredibly rewarding to see our creativity come to life and to have our efforts recognized with the honor of winning “Most Creative.” The experience has bolstered my confidence in taking on important projects, reaffirming that I have the capability to excel in such endeavors.

WHERE DO YOU FIND INSPIRATION IN DALLAS’ DIVERSE ARTS AND CULTURAL SCENE?

We found inspiration in the realm of vintage couture. Exploring the intricate details and timeless elegance of vintage fashion not only sparks creativity but also pays homage to the rich history and artistic expression embedded in the Dallas cultural landscape.

HOW DO YOU INCORPORATE FLOWERS INTO YOUR PERSONAL STYLE – FASHION AND/OR HOME?

I treat flowers as the "earrings" in every room, adding a touch of natural beauty and vibrancy. I enjoy layering floral arrangements and plants with various textures in home design, creating a harmonious and inviting atmosphere. For me, no home is complete without the presence of plants, which add life and personality to any space.

IS THERE AN OUTSTANDING FLOWER THAT HAS PLAYED A ROLE IN A KEY MOMENT OF YOUR LIFE?

Passion Flower grew in my grandfather’s garden, symbolizing precious moments of connection and reflection. Its brief blooming period serves as a poignant reminder to pause and appreciate the fleeting beauty of life’s moments.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB?

My team. At this stage in my business, I cherish the collaborative environment with other creative team members. They continually inspire and challenge us, pushing our designs to new heights and ensuring that each project is elevated to its fullest potential.

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS WHEN DESIGNING AN ARRANGEMENT?

My creative process begins with envisioning color. I see color as the foundation of my design, much like a painter’s palette. I don’t believe in unusual color combinations - even combinations that don’t traditionally match can make perfect sense in a floral arrangement. I approach each arrangement with the mindset of blending colors harmoniously to create a masterpiece overall. From there, I consider the shape, texture, and size of each element, carefully selecting flowers and foliage to complement the color scheme and achieve the desired aesthetic. Throughout the process, I aim to create balance, depth, and visual interest, ensuring that the final arrangement evokes the desired emotion and leaves a lasting impression.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST MISTAKE YOU SEE PEOPLE MAKING WHEN IT COMES TO CHOOSING FLOWERS?

Getting too attached to specific blooms. The floral industry is inherently seasonal and can be unpredictable. Therefore, it’s essential to remain open to a variety of options and focus more on color schemes rather than fixating on particular types of flowers. By embracing the seasonality and diversity of available blooms, one can create more dynamic and visually appealing arrangements.

FLOWERS OFTEN HOLD CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE. HAVE YOU EVER INCORPORATED SPECIFIC CULTURAL ELEMENTS OR SYMBOLISM INTO YOUR FLORAL DESIGNS?

One memorable instance was when we created an enormous floral installation using 30,000 marigolds to honor Dia de Los Muertos, recognizing and celebrating our client’s cultural heritage. Incorporating such meaningful elements adds depth and significance to our designs, allowing us to create truly memorable experiences that resonate with our clients on a personal level.

HOW DO YOU SEE THE FUTURE OF FLORAL DESIGN EVOLVING, AND WHAT EXCITES YOU ABOUT THE INDUSTRY'S POTENTIAL?

I see a renaissance, with a resurgence of interest in incorporating floral elements into home decor. It’s exciting to witness people rediscovering their love for flowers and embracing them as essential elements of interior design. Additionally, the constant development of new varieties and species of flowers offers endless possibilities for creativity and innovation within the industry. However, there’s also the challenge of encouraging young designers to join this field and carry forward the tradition of floral artistry. Overall, I’m excited about the potential for growth, creativity, and renewed appreciation for floral design in the future.

IF YOU COULD SPEND A DAY WITH A FLORAL EXPERT, WHO WOULD IT BE, AND WHAT WOULD YOU WANT TO LEARN FROM THEM?

Tulipina. I greatly admire her talent for creating floral recipes and the rhythmic flow she brings to her designs. During our time together, I would want to learn her approach to combining different blooms and foliage to create stunning arrangements with effortless elegance. I’m eager to gain insight into her creative process, techniques, and the inspiration behind her signature style.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE MOVIE, TV SERIES OR BOOK THAT INCORPORATES FLOWERS IN A BEAUTIFUL WAY?

One of my favorite movies that incorporates flowers in a beautiful way is “Steel Magnolias.” The film not only features stunning floral arrangements throughout but also uses flowers as a poignant symbol of resilience and beauty amidst life’s challenges. The title itself, “Steel Magnolias,” evokes the juxtaposition of strength and delicacy, much like the women in the story. Flowers play a significant role in conveying emotions and themes, adding depth and visual richness to the narrative.

WHAT WOULD YOU INCLUDE IN YOUR DREAM GARDEN?

I’m particularly drawn to blooming vines because of their beauty and the way they effortlessly enhance any space with their trailing foliage and colorful blooms. Additionally, I appreciate that many vines are perennial, meaning they come back year after year, providing a sense of continuity and lasting beauty in the garden. Some specific types of vines I would include are climbing roses for their romantic charm, clematis for their delicate flowers, and jasmine for their intoxicating fragrance. Overall, incorporating blooming vines into my dream garden would create a magical and enchanting oasis that I could enjoy for years to come.

WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE FLOWER-RELATED QUOTE?

“Here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud and the sky of the sky of a tree called life; which grows higher than the soul can hope or mind can hide. And this is the wonder that’s keeping the stars apart.”  - E.E. Cummings

This quote beautifully captures the profound interconnectedness of life and the wonder of existence, drawing parallels between the growth of a tree and the mysteries of the universe. It speaks to the deep, intrinsic beauty found in nature and the significance of carrying love and connection in our hearts.

LASTLY, COULD YOU OFFER OUR READERS A SNEAK PEEK INTO ANY UPCOMING TRENDS THEY CAN LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING FROM YOUR FLORAL STUDIO?

Certainly! While trends in floral design may come and go, one thing that remains constant is our love for color, which is back and here to stay. In the upcoming projects from our floral studio, we are excited to continue exploring the use of color in unique and unexpected ways. We aim to push our clients to embrace more interesting florals beyond the traditional choices, allowing us to create truly vibrant and memorable experiences. Stay tuned for colorful and innovative designs that will inspire and captivate!

A NOTE FROM OUR CO-FOUNDER

"Our first show in Dallas was met with an incredible warmth from so many fabulous florists, and to see the talent that was on display was breathtaking. Partnered with Dallas Museum of Art and celebrating the 150th anniversary of the first ever Impressionist exhibition, House of CLRK took inspiration from Piet Mondrian’s The Winkel Mill, Pointillist Version (1908). Their team showed such vision, as they built their impressionist mannequin so thoughtfully and with such an interesting array of round blooms that perfectly captured the small, distinct dots of color used in pointilism."
